About Me

ADHD is why I became a psychologist.

I'm Dr. Jonathan Shay, a licensed psychologist in Columbus, Ohio. I treat adult ADHD and OCD, and I came to this work through my own ADHD.

How I got here

It looked fine on the surface. That didn't last.

Growing up

Plenty of signs, none of them obvious

I earned good grades, stayed out of trouble, and loved learning. Cramming and intense bursts of effort covered for anything that didn't interest me, and nobody around me noticed a thing.

Looking back, the signs were there: few friends, constant daydreaming, homework started at the last possible minute, and a steady undercurrent of stress.

College

The strategies stopped working

In college, the strategies that had carried me through school stopped working. My grades plummeted, and no amount of “trying harder” helped. I was too ashamed to ask for help, and eventually I became depressed. Treating the depression helped somewhat, but not the underlying problem.

Near the end of my undergraduate program, a mentor validated my struggle and asked if I had been diagnosed with ADHD. I graduated with more relief than pride, and a lasting fascination with psychology.

Grad school

Reaching out, finally

Through persistence, structure, and a more predictable routine, I made it into graduate school, where I faced many of the same challenges. This time, I reached out for help. A psychologist and a psychiatrist led me to an ADHD diagnosis and an effective treatment plan.

For the first time, I felt like I was living in a way that matched my abilities rather than constantly fighting against myself.

Therapy and medication changed my life. I still had to work hard, sometimes harder than other people, but I understood why and knew which strategies worked. I finished at the top of my master's class, then pursued a doctorate.

Now

Why this work

My own experience with identity, self-doubt, and ADHD is what inspired my career. I know how tightly ADHD, anxiety, depression, and shame can intertwine, and how much it helps to finally understand what's happening.

I want to help you make sense of why you feel stuck and find practical ways forward. Sometimes that means challenging unhelpful patterns. Other times it means accepting parts of ourselves that aren't going to change.

Approach

How I work.

A framework with some give

I work from a CBT framework, but flexibility is a strength. I'll pivot when you need me to, then nudge us back to the bigger picture. My style is gentle and often humorous.

Measured, not vague

I like measurement: screeners, assessments, and goals you can check off, like “I will do one load of laundry every day this week.”

Straight with you

I'll tell you if I don't think ADHD is the right explanation, and I'll talk you out of testing that's likely to waste your time and money. Already have an assessment? I'll read the report and tell you whether it holds up.

Medication, when it helps

If you have access, I'll almost always recommend medication. Paired with therapy, it's the gold standard for ADHD, and I know both its benefits and its limits.

A goal of leaving

I'll be clear about why we're here, what we're doing, and when we've hit our mark. My goal is for you to leave therapy.

Focus

What I treat.

Adult ADHD

Adult ADHD is the center of my practice, along with the anxiety, depression, shame, career stress, and emotional regulation struggles that come with it.

How ADHD treatment works

OCD

I treat OCD with exposure and response prevention (ERP): gradually facing what triggers obsessions while resisting compulsions, at a pace we set together. It can show up alongside ADHD or on its own.

Outside the office

A collection of hobbies.

Outside of work, I embrace what many people with ADHD know well: an ever-growing collection of hobbies. I've gone down rabbit holes with athletics, 3D printing, Warhammer, lawn care, and countless other pursuits.

I'm also an avid audiobook listener, from fantasy and science fiction to research-based nonfiction.

I have a large extended family, and my partner and I are raising two wonderful children. I love being a dad, though parenting is probably my most humbling ADHD challenge.
